PLC Ethernet Radio - 2.4 GHz

PLC Ethernet Radio

Synetcom's PLC Ethernet Radio is a rugged, field-proven long range 2.4 GHz radio that connects PLC, RTU, I/O and other SCADA equipment. The radio is designed to provide high speed wireless connectivity between PLCs and PLC networks - without compromising reliability and performance. Typical uses include Ethernet bridging, SCADA device networking, PLC networking and industrial wireless data acquisition and control.

The product can function as a high speed bridge between two Ethernet networks, or it can provide wireless networking between an HMI computer + master PLC and multiple remote slave PLCs.  Complex data acquisition and control systems can be built using repeaters to extend range and coverage.

Data Throughput and Range                      The PLC Ethernet Radio operates with data throughput significantly higher than other industrial (FHSS) Ethernet radios:

WISE-B: 220 KB/s (35 miles with 24 dBi gain antennas)

WISE-BF: 500 KB/s (15 miles with 24 dBi gain antennas)

Maximum throughput occurs on a point-to-point link.  Error-free data transmission is assured via CRC error checking and ARQ (automatic retransmission of packets with bit errors).

Why doesn't the radio transmit at 10 MB/s?  Industrial Ethernet applications often demand long range and high reliability which is obtained only by operating the link more slowly - a limitation of physics, not the radio design.

For example, faster commodity 802.11 Ethernet bridges or routers offer a higher throughout but only over short distances (1-2 miles under ideal conditions) with the same reliability our radios deliver at 35 miles.

Comparison to 900 MHz                             900 MHz industrial Ethernet modems typically operate at <150 KB/s by design, since less bandwidth is available in the 900 MHz band.  Actual data throughput is often compromised further by interference from other users, even if sophisticated hopping algorithms are used in the 900 MHz radio.

Directional antennas (Yagi or Dish) are required for long distance links at either 900 or 2.4 GHz.  2.4 GHz antennas have higher gain and narrower beamwidths, favoring the desired signal, while rejecting interference from other directions more effectively than 900 MHz antennas.

Applications

- Wireless Networking of PLCs

- Industrial Wireless Ethernet SCADA systems

- Wireless PLC Data Acquisition

- Wireless PLC Remote Control

- Long Distance Wireless PLC Ethernet Links

Transmission Range: Synetcom specifies a 35-mile range (PLC Ethernet Radio) that includes a 20 dB margin (if the signal fades as much as 20 dB - a factor of 1/100 - the link continues to operate).

Obstructions in the line of sight path reduces range, depending on the type of obstruction.  Contact our factory for assistance.

2.4 GHz versus 900 MHz Radios for Heavy Interference PLC Radio Applications:
  • Range: 2.4 GHz offers more range than 900 MHz. FCC rules allow higher antenna gain at 2.4 GHz for point-to-point networks.  Higher gain antennas (such as dishes) favor the desired signal while better rejecting interfering signals.

  • Bandwidth: The 2.4 GHz band has three times more bandwidth than the 900 MHz band.  PLCs communicate and respond quicker using the PLC Wireless Ethernet Radio.  PLC ladder logic and databases are updated quicker.

  • International Compliance: Some customers want solutions they can use anywhere in the world. The 2.4 GHz band is the only option for international unlicensed operation.

  • Electrical Noise: Certain industrial operations produce a broad spectrum of noise which declines at higher frequencies. 2.4 GHz offers significant noise rejection versus 900 MHz.

  • Adjacent Band Interference: The 900 MHz ISM band is adjacent to high power paging services and near a cellular band. Local cell phones and 2-way radios are more likely to affect 900 MHz gear than 2.4 GHz gear.
